Determining the right design
1. How many panels?
Each door is made up of bookcase “panels” with a maximum width of about 30” each. Therefore, the width of the opening will determine the number of panels.
* “Freestanding” units simply cover an opening, regardless of its size or even shape. Therefore, a Two Panel Freestanding unit could cover any size opening from 0 to 60”.
2. “Freestanding” or “Recessed”?
Smaller rooms lend themselves to the recessed designs since they take less space out of the room itself. The surrounding space usually helps determine the design. From there it’s simply about homeowner preference.
3. Out-swing or in-swing?
Freestanding units can only swing out. Recessed units can be designed to swing either in or out depending on the space. A reach-in closet, for example, would need to have an out-swing design.
4. Choose your woods, finishes and other options.
